Fiona Faumuina (b. 1985 in Norfolk, England) lives and works in London. Motivated by a desire to celebrate joy, she uses fabrics both printed and found, beads, needle felting and other found objects to create textural pieces akin to sculptural painting which capture dream-like glimpses into love, friendship and intimacy. Swirling and textural digital images are collaged together with found materials, natural fibres and beads as an exploration into the artist’s own memories and connections to others, objects and nature. Themes of separation and togetherness are explored through the dismantling and reunification of imagery in an attempt to redefine and question the value of our digital images.
The slow nature of beadwork and embroidery along with the history of beads as a form of currency are the artist’s own tribute to intimacy, and invite the viewer to reflect upon what is truly valuable to them in an age where we rarely slow down and are increasingly disconnected from ourselves, nature and others.
